LET BLACK GIRLS HAVE A CHILDHOOD, INNOCENCE SHOULDN'T BE A PRIVILEGE
Welcome to my final Action Project for my civic class, Global Peace. In this class we learned how to approach situations with non-violence using Ghandi's policies. Although I believe differently from a lot of what the class taught, I still learned a lot to use in my activism. Ghandi is not someone I agree with, he used a lot of anti-black rhetoric in his Indian daily newspaper and he didn't like Africans, he was also a pedophile. I believe violence is sometimes a nesseccary evil, another reason why I don't like his teachings. For this project we had to come up with a form of activism to impact where we live. I partnered with my sister, NG, to do this project. We decided to focus on the topic of the Adultification and Hyper-sexualization of black girls. This not only happens in the city of Chicago, but everywhere, you can step into any space with black girls and see it happening. Adultification and hyper-sexualization is a form of violence that is committed against black girls. We put up posters all over the city to raise awareness, and our goal was to reach people who can really make a difference, and we did just that. I posted my project on social media and it reached over 500 likes and 150 shares. We caught the attention of many black girls who experience the same when they go outside or even growing up hyper-sexualized by family members. This is written by 2 black girls, for black girls like us. This project is personal to me because I experienced adultification in schools I attended, in public, and in my home. Below is our presentation, read and learn to change your language surrounding what black girls say, wear, and do.
